Hi everyone, my name is Malik Segawa I’m a illustrator, storyteller, author and activist. Born in Uganda, 1991 and raised in London, a diverse city in the UK. I grew up in a working-class family, where I learned the value of hard work and determination. I’m a quiet and introspective person, but my artwork speaks volumes. I’m highly creative, always coming up with new and innovative ideas.
From a young age, I possessed an innate talent for drawing and storytelling, my imagination are vibrant tapestry of visuals and narratives. My subjects were frequently gas mask-clad figures, their obscured faces hinting at the anxieties and complexities of the world around me. These illustrations were more than mere depictions. They were political statements, subtle critiques of societal structures and power dynamics. Even tho I studied sound engineering technology and IT. Art has always remained my great passion.
I wasn’t content to simply visualize my thoughts, I meticulously wove them into short stories, each a world unto itself, populated by characters both whimsical and poignant. My narratives resonated with a raw, unflinching honesty, exploring themes of identity, isolation, and the search for meaning in a world often shrouded in ambiguity. It was evident from a young age that I was not simply a gifted artist, but a burgeoning storyteller with a potent voice, a voice that sought to challenge, provoke, and inspire, all through the evocative power of my art.
Gas Mask:
My captivating illustration gas mask characters find inspiration in the extraordinary legacy of Garrett Morgan, a pioneering inventor, astute businessman, and dedicated activist whose ingenuity profoundly impacted public safety. Morgan’s seminal contributions include an early iteration of the gas mask, a device that would prove invaluable in protecting firefighters and civilians from toxic fumes in industrial accidents and war zones. His innovative traffic signal, featuring alternating red and green lights, revolutionized urban traffic management, enhancing safety for both motorists and pedestrians.
Notably, Morgan’s sewing machine invention not only advanced garment production but also paved the way for his entrepreneurial ventures that supported his philanthropic endeavors. Morgan’s unwavering commitment to community betterment is echoed in my artistic vision, which celebrates the transformative power of invention and the indomitable spirit of those who dedicate their lives to safeguarding others.
The gas masks represent the masks we all wear in society as part of a social, spiritual and psychological warfare. My gas mask characters have become a symbol of resistance and fighting for change. I often collaborate with other activists and artists, using my art to amplify their voices and causes.
Storytelling:
My captivating storytelling technique, employing gas mask-clad characters, draws inspiration from the literary giant William Shakespeare. Shakespeare, renowned as the greatest writer in English literature and a preeminent dramatist, crafted intricate tales that resonated with audiences across time. My incorporation of gas masks, symbolic of obscured identities and distorted perceptions, echoes Shakespeare’s exploration of human nature and the complexities of the human experience.
Just as Shakespeare used poetic language and theatrical devices to unveil characters’ inner conflicts and unravel intricate narratives, I use gas masks to evoke a sense of mystery and detachment, allowing viewers to delve into the depths of the human psyche. Through this unique storytelling method, I pay homage to Shakespeare’s enduring legacy and demonstrate the transformative power of art to transcend time and inspire creativity.
Revolutionizing Art in the 21st Century:
I’m an exceptional activist who defies the traditional mold of street protests and placards. Instead, I harnesses the power of art, utilizing gas mask characters to illuminate pressing social and political issues. My mission is not about mere awareness but about transforming narratives and perspectives within society.
My focus is broad, encompassing climate change, homelessness, mental health, drug abuse, and violence. I believe that through my artistic endeavors, I can revolutionize art itself, making it a catalyst for meaningful dialogue and positive change. My gas mask characters serve as symbols of anonymity and vulnerability, allowing viewers to connect with the human stories behind the issues he tackles.
I hope that my work will spark empathy, challenge societal norms, and inspire individuals to take action towards a more just and equitable world. My vision is not only to raise awareness but to create a lasting impact, transforming art into a powerful tool for social progress.
Current and Future Projects:
I consider myself, an ambitious and visionary artist, who set his sights on an ambitious goal to build a £6 billion art portfolio and a network of exhibition galleries under the banner of (MS Exhibition Arts ) worldwide. This grand vision is fueled by my dedication to the art world, and I’m currently pouring my creative energy into a series of large-scale art projects, simultaneously laying the groundwork for the establishment of my very own foundation, the (Malik Segawa Foundation).
This foundation will act as a vehicle for my philanthropic aspirations, with a key element being the future auctioning of some of my artworks. The proceeds from these auctions will be directed towards a variety of worthy causes, ensuring that my artistic passion is not only a source of beauty but also a force for positive change.
As I meticulously craft my future art empire, I simultaneously weaving together a tapestry of artistic excellence and charitable purpose, leaving an indelible mark on both the art world and the lives of those in need.
